Released for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) in 1994, Super Metroid is a landmark title that revolutionized the action-adventure genre. Developed by Nintendo and Intelligent Systems, this critically acclaimed game introduced players to a hauntingly atmospheric world and a level of exploration rarely seen before. This was a landmark title on the system and took full advantage of the power it had. As talk of 32-bit systems hit its peak, Nintendo doubled down on the 16-bit era with a title harkenig back to its glory days.

Super Metroid is the third installment in the Metroid series, following the adventures of the intergalactic bounty hunter Samus Aran. The game takes place on the planet Zebes, where Samus must rescue a kidnapped Metroid creature and prevent the Space Pirates from exploiting its power. Story has a fairly strong suit for the series and this game really takes advantage of that, offering depth and a little bit of mystery to keep players engaged.

What sets Super Metroid apart is its emphasis on non-linear exploration and atmospheric storytelling. The game introduces a vast, interconnected world that encourages players to explore and discover its secrets at their own pace. Each area is intricately designed, featuring hidden pathways, secret rooms, and challenging puzzles that require creative thinking to overcome.

The gameplay mechanics of Super Metroid are a perfect blend of action, platforming, and exploration. Samus is equipped with a wide array of weapons and abilities, allowing for versatile combat and navigation. From the iconic Arm Cannon and Morph Ball to the various power-ups and upgrades, the game provides a sense of progression and empowerment as players unlock new abilities and access previously inaccessible areas. It can be argued that the series hit its gameplay peak here and that many people, when referring to the greatness of the series, are really thinking about this game rather than its predecessors.

What truly sets Super Metroid apart is its atmospheric presentation. The game features detailed pixel art, atmospheric music, and sound design that work together to create an immersive and hauntingly beautiful world. From the eerie depths of Brinstar to the foreboding corridors of Tourian, each area is distinct and filled with atmospheric details that enhance the sense of exploration and isolation. It may not seem so impressive today, but the presentation was something to behold nearly 30 years ago. Though I was dabbling with my 3DO at the time, seeing this game made me appreciate the greatness of the 16-bit era, as Super Metroid really delivered on that front.

Super Metroid's graphics pushed the limits of the SNES hardware, showcasing smooth animations, detailed backgrounds, and impressive special effects. The use of color and lighting contributes to the game's atmosphere, making each location visually captivating and memorable. It paled a little in comparison to the 32bit consoles both available and on the horizon but I doubt many people actually noticed this. They just loved that Nintendo was squeezing every drop out of the system.

The sound design of Super Metroid is equally impressive. The ambient soundtrack perfectly complements the desolate and mysterious atmosphere, creating a sense of tension and wonder. The game's minimalistic approach to sound effects enhances the immersion, with the subtle chirping of alien creatures, the echoing footsteps in cavernous areas, and the powerful roar of bosses.

Super Metroid is an unparalleled experience that combines tight gameplay, atmospheric exploration, and memorable storytelling. It is a game that demands players' attention, inviting them to delve deep into its rich world and uncover its secrets. The sense of discovery and accomplishment that Super Metroid evokes is what has made it a timeless classic in the gaming industry. Pick up a copy and see for yourself. This is a game that plays extremely well even today. It's included in the SNES Classic package, which you can pick up here: SNES Classic
