Hi everyone,
our offshore drilling platform’s primary mud tank agitator drive developed a severe low-frequency hum during fluid blending last night. The housing temperature spiked rapidly, and the operator noted noticeable wobble along the main output shaft under heavy fluid torque.
Upon inspecting the magnetic sump plug, we discovered fine steel slivers mixed into heavily oxidized gear oil. Our lead mechanic suspects that continuous cyclic drag from dense drilling mud caused axial bearing collapse and gear tooth pitting.
Has anyone handled shaft binding on agitators under extreme fluid loads? We are evaluating whether a field rebuild works or if sending it off for a full industrial gearbox repair is necessary.
Thanks in advance
Is High-Viscosity Sludge Ruining Shaft Bearings?
Re: Is High-Viscosity Sludge Ruining Shaft Bearings?
Hi everyone, heavy shaft wobble paired with steel slivers in oxidized oil indicates that your main thrust bearings have collapsed under intense cyclic fluid torque.
Operating a mud agitator with compromised bearings forces the gear teeth to mesh unevenly, which rapidly accelerates tooth pitting and generates severe frictional heat.
Continuing to operate under heavy fluid drag will lock the output shaft and risk scoring the precision Cotta housing bore beyond recovery. Immediately isolate the agitator drive, flush the contaminated oil, and inspect the main shaft seals for axial displacement.
Scheduling a comprehensive gearbox repair will restore exact shaft alignment and protect your equipment. You will ensure reliable offshore operations with a timely gearbox repair.
